Desk: The amount of e-challans issued for traffic rule violations and the
revenue collected from them has increased in recent years, according to numbers
released by the Centre on Wednesday.
In 2022, the Union Road, Transport and Highways Ministry issued over
4.72 million e-challans worth over Rs 7563.60 crore, according to a written
reply to the Rajya Sabha. The money earned in 2022 was close to Rs 2874.41
crore.
Similarly, a total of 4.21 million e-challans were issued in 2021,
amounting to about Rs 5318.70 crore. In 2021, the revenue collected was around
Rs 2205.70 crore.
According to the ministry, Rule 167 of the Central Motor
Vehicles Rules, 1989 states that a challan must be disposed of within 90 days
of its issuance, after which an extra payment notification may be given by
electronic means of communication.
If a challan is not
processed within 90 days, except in the case of offences instituted for
prosecution by a court, the application for the offender's licence or
registration of the motor vehicle mentioned in the challan will not be
processed by the licencing or registering authority, except for applications
relating to permit, fitness and tax(es) of motor vehicle.
