Protesters blocked the National Highway, pelted stones, gheraoed the Karigaon police outpost
Digital Desk: Tensions remain high in Kokrajhar district following violent protests triggered by a mob lynching incident in Karigaon. The unrest erupted late Monday night after a road accident escalated into a fatal attack on a young contractor, Shikhna Jwhwlao Bismit, who was killed by an agitated mob. Four others were injured, and a Scorpio vehicle at the scene was set on fire.
Protesters blocked the National Highway, pelted stones, gheraoed the Karigaon police outpost, and set fire to temporary camps, shops, and public buildings, including Sido Kanhu Bhawan. Several police personnel were injured during clashes, forcing authorities to resort to tear gas, baton charges, and blank firing to disperse crowds.
Mobile internet services have been temporarily suspended in Kokrajhar and Chirang to curb the spread of rumours, while heavy police and paramilitary deployment, including the Rapid Action Force, have been deployed to restore order. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, monitoring the situation from Davos, Switzerland, directed immediate reinforcement of security forces and appealed for community cooperation.
Bodoland Territorial Region Chief Executive Member Hagrama Mohilary called the incident unfortunate and alleged third-party political involvement, urging calm. Meanwhile, All Bodo Students’ Union president Dipen Boro demanded swift justice for the victims, warning that further violence would harm regional peace.
Police forces continue to monitor the situation closely as security forces remain on high alert to prevent further escalation and ensure public safety in the district.
