Digital Desk: A woman impersonating a devotee was caught stealing during the Ambubachi Mela, one of the most significant religious gatherings in Guwahati, Assam. The Guwahati police arrested her at Kalipur Ashram following a report of missing belongings by several devotees. In pursuit of such complaints, the police launched a swift investigation and detained the woman on the ashram premises.
Upon searching of her personal belongings, police retrieved a stolen Realme 11 Pro smartphone, ₹5,496 in cash, a handbag, and other personal objects, which were suspected to have been stolen by the woman from other devotees. The police suspect that she had been targeting unsuspecting pilgrims amid the large crowds and chaos of the festival.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the security arrangements at the Ambubachi Mela, which attracts thousands of pilgrims from across the country and abroad. Devotees have also been complaining, requesting authorities to tighten security and maybe increase the number of police officers so that such thefts are prevented.
The Guwahati police have assured everybody that an adequate investigation is being conducted and the culprit will face charges of the law. They also asked devotees to be watchful and inform them about any frightening activities so that both security and sanctity of the religious event can be maintained.
