Digital Desk: Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday announced Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia compensation to the family of the deceased jawan from the state in the Sikkim flood.

The chief minister on Tuesday paid a visit to the home of Mitul Kalita, an Indian Army soldier from the state who tragically lost his life in the Teesta River after a cloudburst while posted in Sikkim.

When CM Sarma arrived, he presented floral tributes to Kalita's portrait at the residence of Baksa's Anandabazar Hatkhola. He continued by saying that the deceased jawan's family will receive an ex-gratia.

In the recent Sikkim flash floods, Mitul Kalita and 23 other soldiers were reported missing. According to reports, his body was found early on Sunday.





The body of the jawan was then taken to Anandbazaar Hatkhola in Baksa. According to reports, hundreds of people had assembled at Mitul's house to pay tributes to the army jawan.

On behalf of the Assam government, cabinet minister Ranjeet Kumar Dass paid tribute to the deceased soul as he visited them.

Notably, Mitul Kalita was posted to Alipurduar in West Bengal.

His department instructed him to visit Sikkim for some official work; but, on October 4, a cloudburst that hit North Sikkim caused him to go missing.

On October 4, Sikkim witnessed sudden flash floods as a result of a cloudburst and a lake burst, which disrupted normalcy in the state.
