Guwahati: Assam's branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), in collaboration with Assam Branch Indian Tea Association (ABITA) Zone 1, organized a free breast and cervical cancer screening camp. Jokai central hospital in Panitola tea estate hosted the screening camp on Friday.

The camp screened women above 30years and married, across different tea estates, under the Panitola circle of ABITA Zone 1. 

The screening camp was inaugurated in the presence of Sailen Goswami, additional vice-chairman, ABITA and chairman, ABITA Zone 1, Madhurjya Barooah, secretary, ABITA Zone 1, Prerona Kisan, gynecologist, IMA and Mukul Bhattacharyya, Zone 1 medical coordinator, and circle medical coordinator of Panitola circle.

Dr. Kisan, assisted by an experienced nurse, conducted the screening session under Project Swayam. The nursing staff of Jokai central hospital also provided necessary assistance. 

Dr. Bhattacharyya, who directed the lead further stated that 56 female recipients from Dinjan, Kharjan, Nokhroy, Rungagora, Panitola, and Chubwa tea estates visited the camp. Pap smears taken in slides and assigned to the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) for testing.

Madhurjya Barooah, secretary, ABITA expressed his appreciation to the IMA for exercising such an initiative in the tea garden regions.

Barooah also said it was the first screening camp that IMA and ABITA had jointly conducted in the Panitola circle. He stated that such initiatives for other 6 circles Zone 1 will further be beneficial for women in tea gardens.
