  • Commercial LPG cylinder supply in Assam is set to return to pre-crisis levels following the withdrawal of all restrictions by the Union government

All limitations on commercial LPG cylinder supplies have been lifted across Assam with immediate effect, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota announced on Thursday. The decision, communicated by the Union Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, comes in response to an improved geopolitical situation in West Asia, which had previously necessitated temporary curbs on gas distribution.

Mr. Kota conveyed that the Ministry, following a comprehensive review, has instructed all states to relax the sale restrictions on commercial LPG cylinders. This move signals a return to normalcy for businesses and establishments reliant on these supplies. The Government of India had initially imposed these temporary restrictions during the recent West Asia crisis to manage supply chain dynamics.

Key directives issued by the Ministry include the complete withdrawal of sectoral restrictions on non-domestic, or commercial, packed LPG. Consequently, the availability of commercial LPGs will be restored to consumption levels observed before the crisis. Furthermore, bulk LPG supplies are also slated for restoration, reaching up to 50 percent of their pre-crisis volumes.

In a related development, the Ministry has reiterated its long-term vision, advising consumers with access to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) to continue or transition to this alternative. Chief Secretary Kota shared details of a communication from MoPNG Secretary Neeraj Mittal, who had earlier informed all states and union territories about the Centre's decision to revoke these supply constraints. The move is expected to provide significant relief to commercial establishments across Assam, ensuring stable and adequate energy resources for their operations.
