Digital Desk: On 23rd April, in Imphal a candlelight vigil accompanied by prayers was held at Mao Market evening to mourn the death of two people in Ukhrul district. A large number of people, dressed in traditional attire, gathered at the market, lighting candles and offering prayers for the departed souls. The gathering reflected a strong sense of unity and solidarity, as attendees expressed deep grief over the tragic incident.

Two Naga MLAs—Leshiyo Keishing and Kashim Vashum, were also present at the vigil. They joined the public in paying tribute to the victims and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

Addressing the gathering, Th. Angteshang Maring, President of the All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM), asserted that the Naga people have historical rights over the lands they inhabit.

Former United Naga Council (UNC) leader Asinpou Gangmei stated that the Naga community had initially maintained neutrality and even acted as peacemakers following the outbreak of violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zomi groups, reaching out to all communities through peace initiatives.

However, he alleged that continued violence over the past three years, along with recent developments, has compelled the Naga community to protest in order to defend their rights, land, and people. He also criticised the state government, stating that despite having a government in place, there is a lack of effective governance, and called for strong political will to curb anti-social elements and restore peace.

Emphasising the importance of peaceful coexistence among communities, he said such harmony is essential for ensuring a better future.
