By today's midnight, it is expected to have intensified into a severe cyclonic storm.

Digital Desk: The deep depression over the Southeast Bay of Bengal has strengthened into a cyclonic storm, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) regional centre in Bhubaneswar on Thursday.

Umashankar Das, a scientist at IMD Bhubaneswar, announced on Twitter, "Cyclone Mocha has formed in the Southeast Bay of Bengal region."

The IMD also provided an update on the storm's formation, writing, "Deep Depression, intensified into cyclonic storm Mocha and lay centred about 510 km west-southwest of Port Blair, 1210 km south-southwest of Cox's Bazar (Bangladesh) at 0530 hrs IST today the 11th May." By today's midnight, it is expected to have intensified into a severe cyclonic storm."

According to the IMD, after intensifying into a severe cyclonic storm, the system is expected to recurve gradually, move north northeastwards, and weaken slightly from 13th May, crossing southeast Bangladesh and north Myanmar coasts between Cox's Bazar (Bangladesh) and Kyaukpyu (Myanmar) around forenoon of 14th May, 2023 with maximum sustained wind speed of 110-120 kmph gusting to 130 kmph.
