Mumbai: On Saturday, a major fire broke out at a District Hospital situated in Maharashtra’s Ahmednagar.

Due to the incident, at least 10 COVID-19 patients admitted in the hospital has been reported to be killed as per the latest update. The district collector of the Ahmednagar region has confirmed this.

The fire reportedly broke out at around 11 AM on Saturday.

According to reports from multiple sources, six out of the 25 patients admitted in the intensive care unit (ICU) at the hospital have suffered serious burns and injuries due to the fire.

The Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray has ordered an investigation into the incident and asked the local DC to submit a report within a week.

Meanwhile, as a compensation for the incident, the Government of Maharashtra has also announced a sum of INR 5 lakh to the families of the killed patients.

Leaders across the state, union ministers, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi have expressed their sorrow over the incident.  

“Anguished by the loss of lives due to a fire in a hospital in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. Condolences to the bereaved families. May the injured recover at the earliest,” PM Modi tweeted.
