Digital Desk: At a Durga puja pandal in Kolkata, where the "Mahiasura" was substituted by a lookalike of Mahatma Gandhi, controversy broke out. On the anniversary of the "Father of the Nation's" birth, images of the pandal quickly went popular on social media.

In southwest Kolkata, close to Ruby Crossing, the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha organised the puja. The organisers altered the appearance of the specific idol after a police complaint was made regarding the supposed portrayal of Gandhi as "asura".

"The original Durga idol that was revered in this location included a Mahisasur whose visage resembled Mahatma Gandhi. The parallels are only coincidental. A police team visited the pandal after the images went viral and instructed us to replace the face "Chandrachur Goswami, State Working President of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha, spoke to PTI on Sunday.

"We changed it as requested by the cops. We gave the Mahishasur statue a moustache and hair, "he explained.

Sandip Mukherjee, the President of Bangiya Parishad Hindu Mahasabha, denounced the incident.
