The defamation suit was fled by Hitesh Bhardwaj, the founder of Hindu Suraksha Parishad.

Digital Desk: A Punjab court has summoned Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in a Rs 100 crore defamation case filed against him over the party's poll promise of taking decisive action against Bajrang Dal in Karnataka.

The Sangrur district court has asked Kharge to appear in connection with the case on July 10. The defamation suit was fled by Hitesh Bhardwaj, the founder of Hindu Suraksha Parishad.

During campaigning for the just-concluded Karnataka assembly polls, the Congress released its manifesto earlier this month and promised to act tough against outfits like Popular Front of India (PFI) and Bajrang Dal if the party came to power in the state.

Following this, the petitioner decided to sue the Congress chief for defamation.

Hitesh Bhardwaj is expected to hold a press conference in connection with the matter.

The Congress Party easily won 135 of the 224 Assembly seats in the May 10 elections. The BJP lost 66 seats, while the JD(S) gained 19.
