Digital Desk: Rekha Singh, the wife of Naik Deepak Singh, who was killed in the Galwan Valley battles in 2020, has been commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army, officials announced on Saturday.

She has been assigned to a frontline base near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, they added. Lt. Singh concluded her one-year training at the Chennai-based Officers Training Academy (OTA) on Saturday.

The Army tweeted, "Woman Cadet Rekha Singh, wife of Late Naik(Nursing Assistant) Deepak Singh, #VirChakra(Posthumous) got commissioned into #IndianArmy after completing her training from #OTA #Chennai."

The tweet further mentioned, " Naik Deepak Singh made the supreme sacrifice during the Galwan Valley clashes."

About Naik Deepak Singh-

Naik Singh was a member of the Army Medical Corps who was later assigned to the 16th Battalion of the Bihar Regiment.

In 2021, Naik Singh was posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra for his unwavering courage in providing medical assistance to injured soldiers during the battles.

After the Param Vir Chakra and the Maha Vir Chakra, the Vir Chakra is the country's third-highest wartime gallantry medal.

On June 15, 2020, twenty Indian Army men were killed in the line of duty during severe hand-to-hand combat in eastern Ladakh's Galwan Valley clash, the most deadly military conflict between the two sides in decades.

According to his Vir Chakra citation, he had been an important pave way in providing treatment and saving the lives of over 30 Indian soldiers.

"Naik Deepak Singh demonstrated unrivalled professionalism in hostile conditions, unwavering devotion, and supreme sacrifice for the nation," the statement mentioned.
