New Delhi: Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that around 6 lakhs Indians have renounced citizenship in the last five years.
The latest data issued by the Ministry of External Affairs backed up the information provided by the Minister.
Rai responded to a question, and he has further provided a written draft as a response. However, the reason for the renouncing of citizenship was not mentioned in the reply.
The data presented by the minister showed that 1,33,049 Indians gave up Indian citizenship in 2017. Includig, 1,34,561 in 2018, 1,44,017 in 2019, 85,248 in 2020 and 1,11,287 till September 30, 2021.
Data stated that most people gave up their Indian citizenship in 2019, whereas the lowest did in 2020. This data indicates that the swift in citizenship renouncement might have a strong connection with the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mr. Rai further said that in the season 2016-20, 10,645 foreigners applied for Indian citizenship. Out of these, more than 7,782 were from Pakistan, and 452 were stateless.

He further added that 4,177 persons received Indian citizenship throughout the very period. However, the nation-wise breakup was not provided.
“Till now, the Government has not taken any resolution to fix the National Register of Indian Citizens (NRIC) at the national level,” the reply stated.
