The date of June 21 was suggested by Prime Minister Modi in his 2014 address to the UNGA since it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and holds special importance in many cultures.

Digital Desk: The special yoga class led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the grounds of the UN in New York on Wednesday entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest gathering of participants by nationality. To commemorate the 9th anniversary of the International Day of Yoga, Prime Minister Modi led a special yoga practice on the grounds of the UN headquarters.

"Today, a Guinness World Records attempt for the most nationalities participating in a yoga lesson was made. 140 nationalities were the required number. Today, in New York, at the UN, they had 135. It is a new Guinness world records title...," Michael Empric, official adjudicator, Guinness World Records, told ANI.

In his remarks at the special event, Prime Minister Modi stated, "Yoga is an ancient discipline that originated in India. Yoga is unencumbered by copyrights, patents, or royalties. Yoga can be tailored to your age, gender, and degree of fitness. Yoga is genuinely universal and portable."

He continued by saying that it was fantastic to see individuals from many nations together once more to observe Yoga Day. Last year, the entire world came together to support India's request to recognise 2023 as the "International Year of Millets."

"Let's use the power of yoga to be nice to ourselves and to one another as well as to be healthy and happy. Build bridges of friendship, a peaceful planet, and a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future with the help of yoga. Let's work together to achieve the mission of "One Earth, One Family, One Future," said PM Modi.

Since the United Nations General Assembly formally approved PM Modi's proposal to designate a day to honour the traditional Indian workout in 2014, June 21 has been designated as the International Day of Yoga.
