SpiceJet plans to extend this digital boarding initiative to other domestic airports in the near future
Digital Desk: In an effort to achieve the goal of sustainable and efficient air travel, low-cost airline SpiceJet has introduced paperless boarding services in the Shillong Airport- adding it to the list of firsts in the Indian Airlines industry with WhatsApp-based boarding passes at the airport check-in counter.
The new system targets to offer faster, greener and more seamless way of check-in for passengers. Travelers will no longer have to wait in line at the airport, print their boarding passes, and wait in line again once they get to check in at the counter; instead, the boarding passes will be sent to them through WhatsApp, cutting on the print cost and reducing the time the passenger spends at the airport.
SpiceJet plans to extend this digital boarding initiative to other domestic airports in the near future, aiming to transform how passengers check in across India.
Despite the availability of web check-in options and the Digi Yatra initiative, over 9 million paper boarding passes were printed at Indian airports in June 2025 alone, generating nearly six tonnes of carbon emissions. SpiceJet new system is taking into account this Environmental burden through paperless travel.
Speaking on the launch, GP Gupta, Chief Strategy Officer at SpiceJet, commented that Paperless boarding at Shillong Airport will be one of our biggest steps towards a paperless airport and we hope to continue to expand this to other airports in India as well in the near future.
This is a landmark step that reaffirms SpiceJet in its commitment in utilizing technology and being a pioneer in green flights that lay down the gauntlet in the Indian airline industry.
