New Delhi: The new covid variant has been found in 54 percent of the recently examined samples in the national capital, said Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain.
Jain stated that as a part of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), a strict restriction had been implemented to prevent the spread of covid-19. If more restrictions have to be taken, it will be decided by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA).
Statement from Jain’s office stated, “As per GRAP, a Yellow alert has been issued in Delhi. The government has resolved not to issue a Level 2 notice. The alerts will be issued as per GRAP.”
Moreover, the statement also stated that the Omicron variant has been found in 54% of new cases in the national capital.
Earlier, Jain said, “According to the most recent genome sequencing data, Omicron is present in 46% of the cases. These include those who have never travelled before.”
When asked if Omicron will be the dominant version in an impending third wave of the pandemic, Jain responded, “Indeed, the variant is steadily spreading among the population and its number will increase in the next days.”

He further stated that just 102 out of the 200 coronavirus patients in Delhi hospitals are from the city. In addition, 115 people were transferred immediately from the airport to hospitals.
“115 hospitalized Covid patients in Delhi exhibit no symptoms and are being admitted to hospitals as preventive measures. None of the hospitalized patients are on oxygen.” Jain said.
According to the minister’s office statement, the Delhi government has chosen to open four step-down Covid care centers at Teerapath Bhawan, Sardar Patel Covid Care Centre, Commonwealth Games Village, and IBIS Hotel.
The statement added that the step-down covid care center would be used when hospitalized patients’ health improves and they no longer require hospital care.
Giving stock of the medicine in the hospitals, Jain states that the Delhi government has also instructed all the city hospitals to keep a three-month supply of medicines.
On Wednesday, the Delhi government said that the international travelers who were tested negative for covid-19 at the airport later were found to be infected with the deadly virus after a few days. In this duration, they infected their family members.
Recently, to curb the rapid infection of the deadly disease, the Delhi government has imposed strict restrictions on public gatherings, including wedding gyms, spas, schools and funerals.
Moreover, shops and malls are ordered to open on alternate days while metro trains and buses will operate with 50 percent.
According to Jain, nations like the United States and France have seen the biggest spike in daily cases due to Omicron. Still, the good news is that it does not cause serious infection and only a small percentage of patients require hospitalization.
On Wednesday, DDMA said that covid-related limitations imposed in Delhi under the ‘yellow alert’ would be maintained for the time being, with authorities monitoring the situation before deciding on new restrictions.
Due to an increase in coronavirus cases following the arrival of the Omicron variant. The DDMA has issued a ‘yellow alert’ under the GRAP in the city on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the official record shows that on December 28, 262 or 2.92 percent of the 8,965 dedicated Covid beds were occupied, while 97 percent were unoccupied.
