Digital Desk: A three-year-old child reportedly fell ill after consuming expired tomato ketchup purchased from a sweet shop located at Kenduguri in Jorhat. As per reports, a local resident had bought the tomato ketchup from the shop on 7th May for the child. However, the product’s expiry date had already passed nearly two months earlier.

On 9th May, after consuming the ketchup with bread, the child suddenly became unwell. The father later checked the packet and discovered that the product had expired.

Following the incident, the family visited the shop and inspected several cartons of tomato ketchup stored there. It was allegedly found that all the packets had crossed their expiry dates.

After being informed, Bhogdoi Police arrived at the establishment on Saturday night and seized a large quantity of expired tomato ketchup packets from the premises.

The incident has also raised serious questions over the functioning of the Food Safety Department in Jorhat. Locals alleged that the lack of regular inspections by food safety officials has allowed some businesses to continue selling expired food products openly.
