This latest development underscores the ongoing challenges posed by the evolving nature...

Digital Desk: In a concerning development for public health in Kerala, the emergence of the Covid-19 subvariant JN.1 has been reported, adding to the challenges posed by the ongoing pandemic.

Derived from BA.2.86, this new variant is raising alarms among experts who anticipate its potential impact on the already surging COVID-19 cases in the state.

The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) has confirmed the presence of the JN.1 subvariant in Kerala. Chief of INSACOG, NK. Arora, assured that while the variant has been isolated and reported since November, there have been no reports of severe disease or hospitalizations. India is closely monitoring the situation.

First detected in Europe in August 2023, the JN.1 variant has since spread to various countries, including Luxembourg, England, Iceland, France, and the US. Researchers in the US have noted its heightened contagiousness and ability to evade vaccine immunity.

As a proactive measure, the Kerala government is considering precautionary steps in vulnerable areas if the number of cases continues to rise. This latest development underscores the ongoing challenges posed by the evolving nature of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and the need for continuous vigilance in managing the pandemic.
