Digital Desk : Starting 1st August ,  2025, new UPI (Unified Payments Interface) rules will come into effect to improve efficiency and protect users from fraud. These guidelines are issued by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) which applies to every provider of UPI services such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm.

Major Changes to Note:-

Balance Enquiry:

  • Users can now check their bank balance only up to 50 times a day. To reduce server load, UPI apps may restrict balance checks during peak hours. From August onward, account balances will also be shown after every transaction.

Auto Payments:

  • Auto-debits will be processed only during non-peak hours—before 10 AM, between 1 PM to 5 PM, and after 9:30 PM. If a scheduled payment falls within peak hours, it may be processed earlier or later. Failed payments will have retry attempts before being cancelled.

Viewing Bank Details:

  • Users will be allowed to view bank account details (linked to their mobile number) up to 25 times daily. These requests must be made manually by selecting the issuing bank in the UPI app.

Transaction Status Updates:

  • Instead of showing a transaction as "pending" for extended periods, UPI apps will now update payment status within seconds. Users can check the transaction status only three times, with a 90-second gap between each attempt.

Recipient Details:

  • To reduce fraud, the recipient’s registered name and transaction ID will now be shown before every transfer.

According to NPCI, failure to comply with these guidelines may incur fines, limits on UPI APIs or even deactivate the process of onboarding new customers. Such developments are aimed at making it easier to use digital payments and enhance the security of every user.
