The Indian Air Force's Kiran trainer aircraft crashed today while conducting a regular training mission, according to a statement from the air force. Safe ejections were made by both aircrew members. To determine the accident's cause, a court of inquiry has been appointed.
One pilot was killed earlier in January when two Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jets—a Sukhoi Su-30 and a Mirage 2000—cracked during a training exercise near Morena, Madhya Pradesh.
The other plane crashed and landed in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, while the first one went down in Morena.
The potential mid-air collision between the two planes happened as they were travelling at extremely high speeds during a simulated combat mission. Defense sources predicted that further information would surface in the court of inquiry.
According to sources in the defense industry, the Sukhoi had two pilots and the Mirage had one. The Indian Air Force (IAF) deploys both aircraft to the front lines. The two Sukhoi pilots who were able to escape the aircraft were flown to the hospital in a medical chopper. The family of the deceased Mirage pilot has been notified of the tragedy.
