Digital Desk: In a notable sign of an international agreement, India shipped humanitarian aid to Cuba as a consequence of Hurricane Rafael. The destructive Category 3 hurricane struck Cuba’s Artemisa region on the 6th of November, 2024, bringing sustained winds of up to 185 km/h, causing widespread power outages across the island and leading to significant disruption due to which flights were suspended, and heavy rainfall and storm
surges cause devastation in the western regions.

On the 10th of January 2025, The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that the aid includes essential medicines such as antibiotics, painkillers, antipyretics, muscle relaxants, and oral rehydration salts (ORS). This support aims to reinforce Cuba’s recovery efforts, mainly in healthcare, as it clashes with the outcome of the natural disaster.

Over the years, India has consistently supported Cuba during crises. It shows that India’s support reflects the longstanding cooperation and friendship between the two nations. In 2024, India provided 90 tonnes of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) to help battle chronic communicable diseases. During the COVID-19 pandemic, India delivered 524 boxes of life-sustaining
medicines, and in 2023 it donated 12,500 doses of pentavalent vaccines for Cuban Children.

This fresh gesture emphasizes India’s role as a global humanitarian leader and its commitment to encouraging countries in distress. By increasing timely aid to Cuba, India not only reinforced diplomatic ties but also reasserted its position as the “Pharmacy of the World”, offering support
and hope in the face of adversity.

Such global alliances highlight the significance of unity and mutual aid in overcoming international challenges, additionally nourishing the bonds between two nations.
