Nadda instructed officials to ensure that hospitals are fully equipped to handle heatwave-related cases effectively...

Digital Desk: As several parts of India grapple with soaring temperatures, Union Health Minister JP Nadda has mandated the establishment of special heatwave units in central government-run hospitals to address the surge in heat-related illnesses. Delhi has witnessed at least 18 heat-related fatalities between May 23 and June 19, with central government hospitals like RML and Safdarjung reporting multiple deaths due to heatstroke. Safdarjung Hospital alone reported five deaths on Wednesday, and an 82-year-old succumbed at RML on Tuesday.

Nadda, reviewing the situation and hospital preparedness, emphasized the need for optimal care for those affected by the extreme heat. He instructed officials to ensure that hospitals are fully equipped to handle heatwave-related cases effectively.

Earlier this month, the health ministry had advised states and Union Territories to conduct follow-up reviews to ensure the availability of dedicated heatstroke rooms and ORS corners.

Additionally, the ministry urged regional governments to assess their preparedness for heatwave conditions, enhance surveillance, and implement critical fire and electrical safety measures in health facilities.

JP Nadda recently assumed office as the Union Health Minister, succeeding Mansukh Mandaviya, following the formation of the new cabinet under Narendra Modi’s third term as Prime Minister.
